What Nishant Is About
A man’s wife is abducted by the family that holds sway in the village. He works to have those responsible brought to trial, but nobody helps him; neither the villagers nor the authorities move, because the other side holds the power in the district. The woman meets violence and humiliation in the place where she is held, and after a while cannot bring herself to face her husband. The film tells the matter not as a single crime but as the story of how a village’s silence made that crime possible. Shabana Azmi and Girish Karnad appear in Shyam Benegal’s hundred and thirty six minute Indian film, completed in 1975.
