What No Blood Relation Is About
An actress comes back to Tokyo after a successful spell in Hollywood and wants to reclaim the daughter she left behind years earlier, with her gangster brother helping her do it. But the child is now with her father’s second wife, who has raised her as her own, so the film opens up, in 1932, the question of what a birth mother and a stepmother are each owed. Mikio Naruse’s seventy nine minute silent film was adapted from a novel by Shunyo Yanagawa and made at Shochiku. It is regarded as the earliest surviving feature by the director, and it stands out for its mobile camera and for the quiet comment it makes on the Japan of its day. Yoshiko Okada and Shinyo Nara star.
