What Summer Clouds Is About
A woman who lost her husband in the war runs a farm with her small son, under a mother in law whose word carries. An affair begins with the journalist who comes to interview her, but the man is married and has no intention of leaving his wife. At the same time her older brother, faced with the threat of losing land, tries to talk his children into advantageous marriages, while the young want jobs in the city rather than work in the paddy fields. Mikio Naruse gives post war rural life without speeches, through the calculations made inside a family. Chikage Awashima and Yoko Tsukasa appear in the hundred and twenty eight minute Japanese film, completed in 1958.
