Nobody Loves Me

Fanny Fink is coming up on thirty and worn down by loneliness. The idea of death has become an obsession with her; in the evenings she goes to a class about dying. In the building's broken lift she runs into her neighbour Orfeo: a Black, gay, self-declared psychic. Orfeo tells her she will soon meet someone, and Fanny expects it to be Lothar, the building's new manager. The real subject of Doris Dörrie's film is not Fanny's search for love but the friendship built between the two of them. Orfeo starts out looking like a side character and settles into the centre of the film, and Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss takes the part out of being exotic decoration and makes it a real person. Maria Schrader plays Fanny. The comedy does not get lighter as it goes; it gets heavier. What the film says is simple: a person finds happiness not in a prophecy but in whoever is standing next to them.
