Nobody Will Speak of Us When We're Dead

Gloria works as a prostitute in Mexico City and is deep into drink. She ends up in the middle of a settling of accounts between gangsters and runs, going back to Madrid, where she was born. Waiting for her there are a husband lying in a coma in a hospital room and a mother-in-law holding herself together by sheer will. But the information she carried out of Mexico without meaning to does not let go of her, and a hitman follows her to Madrid. It was Agustín Díaz Yanes's first film and one of the most decorated Spanish productions of the nineties: it won eight Goyas, among them best film, best actress and best supporting actress. Its force comes from loading the noir shape onto two women, a daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law. Victoria Abril and Pilar Bardem neither love each other nor let go. Poverty here is not decor but the thing that fixes every option the characters have.
