The story begins in Dubrovnik, just before the Second World War. There are three friends: one of Italian origin, one the son of a family made wealthy by shipping, and one the son of a Jewish antique dealer. Before the war they are inseparable, together at carnivals and at a private fencing club. When the war comes the Italians and the Germans move in and the Independent State of Croatia is set up. The Italian friend goes over to the fascists and marries the sister of his wealthy friend. Killings begin soon after; anyone suspected of Jewish or Serbian parentage, or of being against fascism, is killed. The film tells how a friendship is broken apart by politics. The account softens nothing. Frano Lasić and Milan Štrljić appear in Lordan Zafranović’s hundred and sixteen minute Yugoslav film, completed in 1978.
