What Ode to Billy Joe Is About
Two teenagers in fifties Mississippi, Bobbie Lee and Billy Joe. The town's rules are rigid, the families devout, and adolescence is not listening to any of it. While whatever is between them grows, something else is growing in Billy Joe that he cannot tell anyone about. It ends at the Tallahatchie Bridge. The film comes from Bobbie Gentry's song of 1967. The song never says why Billy Joe jumped, and its entire reputation rests on that refusal. The film supplies an answer, and that decision has been argued about ever since. Max Baer Jr's production catches the oppressive heat of the South and its silences well. Robby Benson and Glynnis O'Connor play it.
