What Of Snails and Men Is About
1992, Romania. The car factory at Câmpulung is on the edge of bankruptcy. A French investor plans to buy the plant and turn it into a snail cannery; of three thousand workers only three hundred would keep their jobs. One of the workers comes up with a way nobody would have thought of: he proposes they earn part of the money as donors at a private medical clinic. Tudor Giurgiu's Romanian comedy starts from a real episode that reached the press in the 1990s. The humour is built on top of what is painful: the collapse of the post-communist factories, the dream of getting rich quickly, and the faith in a saviour arriving from outside. The telling does not mock the workers; it shows them inside their helplessness. Andi Vasluianu takes the lead.
