What Okiku and the World Is About
In the last years of the Edo period, two young men make their living emptying the privies of the tenements and selling the waste to farmers as fertiliser, a cycle the city of that time depended on. Okiku, the only daughter of a fallen samurai family, who teaches children to read and write, crosses their path, and in the middle of those heaps a love story takes root. Junji Sakamoto’s ninety minute Japanese film was shot entirely in black and white, and its ink drawing imagery presents the lowest regarded work there is without any embarrassment about it. Haru Kuroki takes the lead, with Kanichiro and Sosuke Ikematsu alongside her, and it opened on 28 April 2023.
