What Brother's Keeper Is About
At a remote boarding school in the mountains of Eastern Anatolia the rules are strict: the boys wash once a week, and even that is supervised. One night twelve-year-old Memo asks to sleep in his friend Yusuf's bed. The next day Memo cannot get up. While Yusuf tries to get help for him, the staff of the school begin pointing at one another in turn, and outside the snow closes every road. Ferit Karahan's film won the FIPRESCI prize in Berlinale Panorama. The boys speak Kurdish and the school teaches in Turkish; the film shows that rather than underlining it. The point is not who is to blame but that nobody will take responsibility.
