What Old Ironsides Is About
The film tells the expedition of 1803 against the Barbary pirates who were attacking American shipping, through the frigate Constitution, known as Old Ironsides. At the centre of the account is an invented merchant ship, the Esther: when its crew and passengers fall into the hands of the same pirates, the navy’s mission joins with their story. The closeness between a young sailor aboard and one of the women passengers develops in the meantime. The film embellishes the historical event and builds it as an adventure. James Cruze’s hundred and fourteen minute silent American film was shot at sea with real sailing ships; Charles Farrell, Esther Ralston and Wallace Beery appear.
