What The Covered Wagon Is About
Two wagon trains join up where Kansas City now stands and set out west on the long journey to Oregon. Desert heat, mountain snow, hunger and attacks come one after another along the way, and on top of that Molly has to choose between the brutish Sam and Will, the captain of the other train, while a matter out of Will’s past comes to light. James Cruze’s ninety eight minute Paramount production was adapted from Emerson Hough’s 1922 novel. J. Warren Kerrigan and Lois Wilson take the leads, with Ernest Torrence and Alan Hale in the cast. It was released in 1923, was the most expensive western made up to that point, and as the year’s second highest grossing film carried the genre onto an epic scale.
