On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Peter R. Hunt had worked on the five preceding Bond films as editor and second unit director; Broccoli and Saltzman gave him the chair because his fast cutting had set the series style. The earlier gadgets were pushed back in favour of Ian Fleming’s novel, an annotated copy of which Hunt reportedly carried on set. An early draft had Bond undergo plastic surgery to explain the new face; that was dropped and the change of actor simply ignored. George Lazenby was chosen after being spotted in a chocolate advertisement. He was offered a seven film contract, but his agent argued the character would be archaic in the 1970s. John Glen’s second unit shot the ski chases, cameraman Johnny Jordan dangled below a helicopter in a parachute harness. For Tracy’s death Hunt called Lazenby in at eight, rehearsed him all day and shot it once he was spent. At the 1970 Golden Globes it took one nomination, New Star of the Year Actor; Jon Voight won it. A good fit if you want the one Bond film in which he marries, and want an editor turned director cutting a chase. Not for anyone after Connery’s easy mockery; this Bond looks jumpy and exposed, and the close is not happy.
