Terence Young started the series on 1.1 million dollars; the art director Ken Adam had 14,500 pounds for sets, plus 6,000 from the producers themselves. Adam covered the shortfall with a joke. He got a slide of Goya’s Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery, painted a copy over a weekend and hung it in the villain’s room. The original had been stolen in August 1961 and was still missing while the film played, so British audiences knew who stood accused. Connery’s manner was built on the job: Young took him to his own tailor and hairdresser and round the restaurants and casinos of London. Ursula Andress’s lines were dubbed, uncredited, by Nikki van der Zyl, and the figure in the gun barrel is the stunt man Bob Simmons. Bond’s equipment is not yet a set piece: all he gets is an order to hand over his Beretta for a Walther PPK. The villain named in the title does not appear until Bond and Honey are captured on the island. A good fit if you will meet the man in the title only after Bond is captured, spending the time until then on an investigation in Jamaica. Not for you if you want gadgets, a rigged car and a run of one liners; most of that came later.
