What One Day Is About
Singing lives with her mother on the island of Kinmen and earns her living cleaning on a ferry that serves a military base. She has a recurring dream in which she meets a man she can neither recognise nor understand when he shouts at her. One day on the ferry she meets a young soldier who resembles him, and he tells her that one day he will be her boyfriend. When the power goes out the two of them drop into a strange in between world and sail toward South America on an empty vessel. Hou Chi-jan’s ninety three minute Taiwanese film is put together like a love poem close to magical realism, with Hou Hsiao-hsien as executive producer, and it screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010.
