A science teacher stabbed by one of his students returns to work as a substitute in Los Angeles after a long gap. The class tests him from the first day. The film shows the school's helplessness without inflating it, but in the second half the teacher's drift into methods of his own takes the narrative somewhere uncomfortable. The ambiguity is deliberate: the film neither justifies nor absolves him. Samuel L. Jackson leads. The script was written by someone who had actually taught, and a closing card says so.
