What One Hamlet Less Is About
Hamlet, prince of Denmark, takes little interest either in his family’s affairs or in the fate of the kingdom, and is not drawn to a doll like Ophelia. He is irritated by his friend Horatio, who tells him of his father’s ghost and its call for revenge, and by Polonius, who sets about analysing him by explaining the Oedipus complex. All he can think of is running away to Paris with Kate, the leading actress of the company performing at Elsinore, and becoming a playwright. Carmelo Bene breaks the text apart and rebuilds it; performance, sound and repetition become the film’s own language. The seventy minute Italian production was completed in 1973.
