What Salomé Is About
Salome is the daughter of King Herod’s second wife. The king is fixated on her, and when she fails to seduce the prophet John the Baptist she dances for Herod and asks for his head in return. Carmelo Bene does not tell this familiar story so much as run over it: working from his own stage adaptation, he breaks Oscar Wilde’s play apart, has lines repeated, and builds a psychedelic mockery out of hard cuts and costumes made of neon. Donyale Luna and Veruschka von Lehndorff appear in it. It is regarded as one of the furthest points of Bene’s long quarrel between theatre and cinema.
