One Hour Photo

Mark Romanek wrote the film as well as directing it, having come up through music videos. He asked his friend Trent Reznor for the score, but while the music was still at demo stage Romanek made an apologetic call: the studio was pressing him to hire a real composer. The job went to Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. Shooting started in Los Angeles on 30 October 2000 and finished in January 2001, yet the film was not shown until Sundance in January 2002. It opened in limited release on 21 August 2002 in 7 cinemas, averaging 45,930 dollars a screen, and widened to 1,212 cinemas on 13 September. Made for 12 million dollars, it took 52.2 million worldwide. The response split, and the split describes the film: reviews were largely favourable while audiences polled by CinemaScore graded it C. Robin Williams won best actor at the Saturn Awards for the part, on a night when he was also nominated in the supporting category for Insomnia. Connie Nielsen was nominated for supporting actress and the film in the thriller category. A good fit if you want a thriller that draws its threat from the hero’s job, printing other people’s photographs. Not for anyone looking for the comic register Robin Williams is known for; this part is built against it.
