What Static Is About
Ernie, who has lost his job at a crucifix factory, gives all his time to the invention he has built in the attic; he believes that what he has made will change the way people look at death. Nobody but his cousin and his drummer friend Julia takes him seriously. When he finally shows the invention to the town, all that appears on the screen is static; Ernie insists that the image is real, and in desperation makes a move to be heard. The film keeps both the faith and the mockery at the same distance. Mark Romanek’s ninety three minute American film is the director’s first feature; Keith Gordon and Amanda Plummer appear.
