What Operation Thunderbolt Is About
Menahem Golan’s 1977 film was made only a year after the events and with the cooperation of the Israeli government. In July 1976 an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris via Athens is hijacked and brought down at Entebbe in Uganda; the Jewish passengers are separated and held against the release of prisoners in Israeli jails. After long argument the government sends a commando unit. The picture mixes its dramatisation with documentary footage of the period, so Rabin and Peres appear from the archive, and the effect is a film openly built to confirm the account it is dramatising. Yehoram Gaon and Klaus Kinski head the cast. It was nominated for the foreign-language Oscar.
