Kazablan

The film is set in the port of Jaffa. Kazablan is an army veteran. He now heads a neighbourhood gang. He covers his bitterness with a loud front. He is sweet on a young woman called Rachel. Rachel lives with her father and stepmother. The closeness scandalises the neighbourhood. Her family is against it too. There is also Yanush, a middle-aged shoe seller. Yanush wants the young woman for himself. He counts himself the fitter suitor, since Kazablan is a Sephardi from Morocco. Meanwhile the neighbourhood has another trouble. The city wants to pull down the old houses. The residents pool money to save them. But the money that is collected is stolen. Kazablan is jailed for the theft and has to clear his own name. Yehoram Gaon and Efrat Lavie take the leads in Menahem Golan’s Israeli musical of 1973.
