Broadway director Julian Marsh is in poor health and needs one more hit before he can retire. Rehearsals go well until the star, Dorothy Brock, breaks her ankle the night before the premiere and her understudy Peggy has to take over. Made during the Depression, the film is unsentimental about the backstage: unemployment, rent, plain desperation. Busby Berkeley’s dance numbers pull in the opposite direction and are pure fantasy, and the tension between those two registers is what still holds it up. Ruby Keeler and Ginger Rogers are in the cast.
