What It Happens Every Spring Is About
A college chemist's experiment is wrecked when a baseball comes through the window, and what is left behind is an unexpected substance: a liquid that repels wood. He grasps the possibilities at once, takes a leave of absence, and turns up in the major leagues as a pitcher, because a ball no bat can touch is now available to him. The comedy comes less from the cheating than from the fact that he treats it as a discovery and feels no guilt whatsoever. The story, by Shirley W. Smith and Valentine Davies, was nominated for the Academy Award for best motion picture story. Baseball's own authorities refused to sanction the film, so no real team name or stadium appears anywhere in it.
