Everybody Wants Some!!

Texas, 1980. Jake joins the college baseball team and meets his housemates three days before classes start. The film covers those three days: a disco, a punk gig, a country party and an endless contest of talk. Richard Linklater directed. He finished the script in 2005 and could not finance it; the film only got made once Annapurna Pictures came in. The story draws on his own time at Sam Houston State University. Linklater calls it a spiritual sequel to both Dazed and Confused and Boyhood. The Boyhood link is literal: that film ends with a young man arriving at college, and this one starts exactly there. Blake Jenner plays Jake and Zoey Deutch plays Beverly, with Glen Powell and Ryan Guzman in the house. It runs 116 minutes, was shot in Austin and released by Paramount. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 87 percent. Critics praised the way it thins out and humanises the jock stereotype; some faulted it for never engaging with the social questions of its period. The box office was weak: 5.4 million dollars against a 10 million budget. Who it is for: viewers who like Linklater's eventless, conversation-driven films. Who it is not for: anyone wanting plot. There is no conflict and no goal here, only three days.
