Slacker

Over one day in Austin the camera passes from one person to the next. Nobody becomes the hero of a story; each talks for a while and the camera attaches itself to the next. The film sustains that structure to the end and moves through around a hundred people. The narrative gives conspiracy theories, thesis ideas and everyday nonsense the same seriousness and judges none of them. Richard Linklater wrote, directed and appears in the opening scene. It was made on a very small budget and is often cited as a starting point for the rise of American independent film in the nineties. Who it's for: those who like films without narrative, built on talk. Who it's not for: viewers who want to follow a character; nobody stays for more than two scenes.
