Brother Orchid

John Sarto ran the rackets for years. One day he announces he is out and goes to Europe, meaning to become a man of culture. He spends his money, comes back, and wants his position again. But Jack Buck has taken it and has no intention of handing it over. They shoot Sarto and leave him for dead. Wounded, he ends up at a monastery. The monks take him in, get him well, and set him to growing flowers. At first Sarto thinks of the place as somewhere to hide; then he notices it is the first place he has ever been respected. Lloyd Bacon directs the American film; eighty-eight minutes, with Edward G. Robinson as Sarto, Humphrey Bogart as Buck and Ann Sothern as his girl. Warner was making gangster pictures in those years; this one takes the same shape and the same actors and turns them into comedy.
