A country boy arriving in Hong Kong in the thirties buys roses said to bring luck from an old woman and, through a chain of coincidences, ends up running a gang. When the old woman announces her daughter is coming to the city, the accidental crime boss and a singer from the gang’s nightclub construct an enormous lie to make her mother look respectable. Jackie Chan directed it and stars, and this piece, drawn from a Frank Capra story, is among his most lavish and most sentimental. Anita Mui is also in the cast.
