What Othello Is About

Othello is a celebrated general who marries Desdemona in secret. The marriage angers her noble father and feeds the envy of Iago. Sent to Cyprus, Othello wins on the field, but Iago’s manipulations overshadow everything. Iago makes it appear that Desdemona is unfaithful with Cassio, Othello’s lieutenant. Taken by jealousy, Othello kills his wife. Learning the truth far too late, he takes his own life. The work is adapted from Shakespeare’s play and uses the translation by Boris Pasternak. It was the first colour film version of the play and won best director at Cannes in 1956. Sergey Bondarchuk and Irina Skobtseva appear in Sergei Yutkevich’s hundred and seven minute Soviet film, completed in 1955.
