What The Great Warrior Skanderbeg Is About
The film tells the life of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the fifteenth-century Albanian lord who held out against Ottoman armies for more than two decades. Although it was an Albanian and Soviet co-production, most of it was shot in the Soviet Union, it was made in Russian, and the cast was largely Soviet, with the Georgian actor Akaki Khorava playing Skanderbeg himself. Sergei Yutkevich directed, and at Cannes in 1954 the film took the International Prize while Yutkevich received a special mention for his direction. It is also worth looking at as an artefact of its moment: Albania’s national hero, put on screen with a Moscow budget in the middle of the Cold War.
