What Our Father, the Devil Is About
Ellie Foumbi's 2023 film follows Marie, a cook at a care home in the south of France. She came from Africa and has built a quiet life. A new priest arrives at the home. Marie recognises him as the commander who killed her family; from that point the film watches at length what she will do, and the narrative makes neither revenge nor forgiveness easy. Babetida Sadjo leads. The tone is close to a thriller and the violence limited. The close gives no firm answer. Who it's for: viewers of drama built on moral dilemma. Who it's not for: viewers for whom accounts of massacre would be difficult; the film conveys them through speech.
