Our Souls at Night

A film set in a small town in Colorado. Addie has been a widow for years. One evening she knocks on the door of her neighbour across the street with a proposal: she would like to sleep at his house at night. Not sex, but talk and the ability to sleep; both of them lie awake. Louis agrees. The first nights are awkward, then they begin to talk. What they lived years ago, their marriages, what they lost and what they never told anyone come out at night. The town hears. Gossip starts and the children on both sides are uncomfortable; Addie's son in particular folds the matter into his own troubles. After a while Addie's grandson comes to stay for a time and an arrangement of three forms. What the film is interested in is not old age but whether a late closeness can be built and who grants permission for it. The source is Kent Haruf's last novel; he finished the book shortly before his death. Jane Fonda plays Addie and Robert Redford plays Louis. The two had acted together in several films before, with many years in between. Ritesh Batra directed. It was released on a streaming service. A warm choice for anyone who likes calm relationship drama. For a viewer waiting for events, the film is almost entirely two people talking.
