Our Sunhi

Hong Sang-soo's 2013 film follows a young woman who has graduated from film school. Sunhi is applying to study in America and returns to her university to ask her old professor for a recommendation. Around the campus she runs into three men: the professor, her ex-boyfriend, and a director who graduated from the same department. All three feel something for her and all three try to describe her, and what is interesting is that they use almost the same words. Sunhi corrects none of it. The film shows a woman disappearing between the sentences other people build about her, in Hong's familiar manner: long conversations, drinking tables, repeated situations and scenes replayed with small differences. It won best director at Locarno. Who it's for: viewers who like Hong Sang-soo and narratives built on repetition. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and dramatic development; the film is almost entirely talk.
