What Out of the Clear Blue Sky Is About
Pedro Infante, the biggest name in Mexican film and song, died in a plane crash in 1957. This comedy brings him back under an absurd condition: to get into heaven he has to prove he is no longer a womaniser, and he has to do it inside the body of a man who makes a living impersonating him. Omar Chaparro plays both the legend and the impersonator. The premise could have been a nostalgia trap, and the film partly escapes that by putting the impersonator's own marriage at the centre, so the man wearing a legend has to clean up his actual life. Pepe Bojórquez wrote it with Alfredo Félix-Díaz, working from material by Toby Campion. Netflix released it on 24 December 2019. The flaw is dependence. For viewers who do not know Infante's songs or what he meant, half the emotional charge simply is not there, and the ending ties itself up far too neatly. Who it is for: viewers open to Mexican popular culture and musical comedy. Who it is not for: anyone who dislikes humour built on nostalgia.
