What Outrageous! Is About
In Richard Benner’s 1977 Canadian film, Robin Turner is a Toronto hairdresser who works with drag performers and dreams of one day finding the nerve to go on stage himself. When his friend Liza, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, turns up needing somewhere to stay, the two form an increasingly close bond: he sees her through an unplanned pregnancy and she pushes him toward the act he has been imagining. The film took on homophobia and mental illness at a point when neither was appearing on screen at all. Craig Russell won the Silver Bear for best actor at Berlin, and the picture is treated as a turning point in Canadian queer cinema.
