Outside In

Released after twenty years inside, Chris returns to Carol, the former high school teacher who campaigned for years to get him out. He is in love with her, she is married, and neither can name what this is. Lynn Shelton does not build a love story; the subject is what age twenty years in prison left the man at, and how much of her own life the woman suspended. Jay Duplass co-wrote with Shelton and takes the lead, with Edie Falco as Carol. A small town, rain and empty streets supply the texture. Nobody is rescued, and the film is not sorry about it. Who it is for: viewers who like American independent cinema and quiet relationship drama. Who it is not for: anyone wanting resolution, since nothing here is closed.
