Gerasimos Skiadaresis What Ouzeri Tsitsanis Is About
Thessaloniki in 1942 and 1943, under German occupation. Giorgos, a Christian, and Estrea, a Jewish girl, fall in love; under those conditions the relationship is forbidden and both families object. Most of the story takes place in an ouzeri: the tavern where Vassilis Tsitsanis worked and where he wrote some of his best known songs during the war years. Manousos Manousakis tells the rounding up and deportation of the city’s Jewish community from inside a love story. Rebetiko music is both the sound of the film and its memory.
