What Oxygen Is About
Hans Van Nuffel's 2010 Belgian film follows Tom, a young man living with cystic fibrosis, a condition his older brother carries as well. During one of his hospital stays he meets Xavier, who has the same diagnosis, and the friendship between them becomes the spine of the film. Van Nuffel has cystic fibrosis himself and it shows: shortness of breath here is not a dramatic ornament but work spread across every hour of the day. Hospital corridors, waiting lists and falling in love while knowing death is close all sit together. It won the top prize at the Montreal World Film Festival and the European Discovery award in 2011.
