What Oyuki the Virgin Is About
A civil war is about to break out. Two geishas flee their village. A group of aristocrats travels with them. The journey is a long one. Along the way it becomes clear what each of them is. The aristocrats look down on the women. But it is the women who turn out to act better. The film puts that reversal at the centre of the account. The account is set in the Meiji period. The coming war is the reason for the journey. Difference of class is the matter that carries it. Isuzu Yamada and Komako Hara take the leads, with Daijiro Natsukawa and Yōko Umemura also in the cast, in Kenji Mizoguchi’s Japanese film of 1935.
