Tokyo at the end of the nineteenth century. Kikunosuke is the adopted son of a famous kabuki actor and plays female roles himself; one day he learns that the praise he receives has to do with his father's name rather than his ability. The only person who tells him so is Otoku, a servant in the house, and the two attach themselves to each other. When the family refuses the relationship, Kikunosuke leaves home and starts playing with small provincial troupes; Otoku goes with him and it is she who pays for it. Mizoguchi uses almost no close-ups, staging in long takes from a distance.
