What Paper Mask Is About
A hospital orderly assumes the identity of a doctor who has just died and starts work in the busy emergency department of a small hospital. The nurse he befriends there works out his secret by degrees and, instead of exposing him, helps him keep the pretence going. Christopher Morahan's 1990 film functions less as a thriller than as a criticism of a system: what is actually frightening is how far a man can get without anyone checking. Paul McGann plays the false doctor and Amanda Donohoe the nurse, with Tom Wilkinson alongside. Measured, cold, and steadily tightening.
