What Pappayude Swantham Appoos Is About
Unable to absorb his wife Bhama’s death, Balachandran buries himself in work and, without meaning to, neglects his only son. When Appu comes home from boarding school for the holidays his father promises him everything and delivers none of it, because work keeps swallowing him. The gap starts to be filled by Meenakshi, a woman who tries to stand in for the mother the boy lost. Fazil films the distance between father and son patiently rather than accusingly. Badusha won that year’s Kerala State award for best child artist, and the film ran past two hundred days to become one of the biggest hits of 1992.
