In 1984, looking for an experience deeper than the surface of modern civilisation, Bruno Manser travels into the forests of Borneo and finds it among the nomadic Penan; the encounter changes his life completely. When relentless deforestation begins to threaten the existence of the Penan, Manser takes up the fight against logging, and that stubbornness makes him one of the best known environmentalists of his time. In the end it costs him everything. Niklaus Hilber’s hundred and forty two minute Austrian Swiss co-production is based on a true story, with a score by Gabriel Yared. The Penan roles are played by actual Penan, some of whom knew Manser, and Sven Schelker takes the lead.
