What Parasakthi Is About

A Tamil family comes apart during the Second World War. Three brothers have left Madurai to work in Rangoon. Their sister Kalyani has stayed at home with their father. In 1942 her marriage is arranged. Wartime conditions leave the shipping company able to sell only a single ticket. The youngest brother, Gunasekaran, takes it and sets off. His ship cannot arrive in time and the wedding goes ahead without any of them. On the day Kalyani gives birth, her husband is killed in an accident. Her father dies soon after the news reaches him. The young woman is left with her child and nothing else, and the house is auctioned. She survives by selling food in the street. Gunasekaran sinks into poverty too and feigns madness to get by. The paths of the siblings cross again in ways none of them expect. The reckoning arrives in a courtroom. The script by M. Karunanidhi attacks the religious institutions and the social order of its day. The film was fiercely argued over on release. It also brought Sivaji Ganesan to the screen. Sivaji Ganesan and Sriranjani appear in the hundred and eighty eight minute film, an Indian production R. Krishnan and S. Panju finished in 1952.
