What Patlabor WXIII the Movie Is About
Fumihiko Takayama's 2002 anime is the third Patlabor feature and keeps its connection to the series loose. Accidents involving industrial machines have increased around Tokyo Bay; as the detectives Kusumi and Hata investigate they come upon a creature, and it emerges that this is a biological weapon escaped from a government project. The film barely uses the series' familiar heroes, following instead the ordinary investigation of two older policemen at a deliberately low pace. The story is less science fiction than one of loss and guilt: the reason the creature exists rests on the death of a child. The design is dark and rainy and the music carries the weight. Who it's for: viewers who like slow science fiction crime and the Patlabor series. Who it's not for: anyone expecting robot action; the film hardly shows any.
