What Payroll Is About
A gang planning to take a northern factory's weekly wages finds out, while setting it up, that the firm has started using an armoured van. The plan is wrecked and they go ahead anyway. The van's driver is killed in the raid, and his wife decides not to wait for the police and to find the men herself. Sidney Hayers's 1961 film belongs to the hard end of British crime cinema. It is less interested in the robbery than in what follows it: men who stop trusting each other as the pressure rises, and the stubbornness of the woman coming after them. Billie Whitelaw plays the widow, with Michael Craig and Tom Bell at either end of the gang. The grey streets of an industrial city set the tone.
