What PCU Is About

Tom is about to finish school and comes for a campus visit. He is put up in the most troublesome house on it: everyone at Port Chester University has a cause and nobody in that house does. The residents are against every group and every group is against them. That same weekend the house is at risk of being closed: the rent has not been paid and the administration is looking for a pretext. The only solution is to throw a large party and raise the money. In one day Tom ends up between all sides on campus. Hart Bochner directs. Jeremy Piven, Chris Young and David Spade are in the cast. The subject is the university climate of the early nineties; that there is a separate group for every question and that they clash is the material. The narrative defends no side; the over-earnest groups, the administration and the residents of the house are all made ridiculous. The film takes up the argument over political correctness directly, a current subject in the year it came out. The campus comedy shape is used and the structure proceeds in a known order: threat, plan, party, resolution. It drew no interest on release and became a cult film later through video and television. George Clinton appears as himself and performs in the party section. Who it is for: viewers who like nineties campus comedy. Who it is not for: the humour carries the shapes of its time, some jokes are uncomfortable now, and the plot is weak.
