What Pedro Paramo Is About
When his mother Dolores dies, Juan Preciado goes to Comala to find the father he never knew, Pedro Paramo, and to claim what is his. What he finds is an abandoned town where all that is left are whispers, voices, and people about whom it is never clear who is living and who is dead. Carlos Velo made the film in 1967 from Juan Rulfo's short 1955 novel, with Carlos Fuentes among the writers. Gabriel Figueroa shot it and John Gavin plays the lead. It competed at Cannes in 1967. The novel's shattered handling of time is usually called impossible to film, and this first attempt is built directly on that difficulty.
