Pelikan Blue

László Csáki's 2024 Hungarian film is set in the early nineties. The borders have opened, but an international train ticket costs more than most people can pay. Three young people begin forging tickets. The film tells this not as a crime story but as a generation's wish to see the world; the narrative goes into the detail of the method and shows how the operation grew. It rests on interviews with the real people and was produced entirely in drawing. The images imitate the blue of carbon paper. It stands between documentary and animation. Who it's for: those curious about animated documentary and eastern Europe in the nineties. Who it's not for: viewers expecting conventional documentary; this film is drawn throughout.
