What Perico Ripiao Is About
Three convicts escape from prison and the only things they take with them are three instruments: a guira, a tambora and an accordion. Everyone they meet on the road lands them in trouble, and each time they get out of it with music. The title says exactly that: perico ripiao is the name given to traditional merengue in the Dominican Republic, and that music is played with precisely those three instruments. So the film is named after the means of escape in its heroes' hands. Dominican cinema is small, and this was one of its big local comedies.
